Belgrade, Serbia's capital, has stood at the crossroads of Eastern and Western empires for over two millennia. Once a frontier city of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires, it has been destroyed and rebuilt over 40 times. The Kalemegdan Fortress, overlooking the Danube and Sava Rivers, reflects its layered past—from Roman castrum to Ottoman stronghold to Habsburg garrison.

Day 2: Novi Sad Day Trip

Returning to Belgrade allows time to explore its architectural and cultural evolution. The Old Town blends Habsburg-era façades with modernist socialist buildings. The Church of Saint Sava, still under construction, stands as one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world and a powerful symbol of Serbian spiritual identity.

Day 4: Drina River & Drvengrad

Drvengrad is a traditional wooden village built by Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica, inspired by folklore and cinematic nostalgia. Nearby, the iconic House on the Drina—a solitary cabin balanced on a rock in the middle of the river—has withstood floods for decades, becoming a symbol of resilience and harmony with nature.

Day 7: To Kotor, Montenegro

Road to the Adriatic: Kotor Arrival

Drive: 3.5 hrs to Kotor (with border crossing) .

Explore: Wander through Kotor’s medieval old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site surrounded by Venetian walls.

Hike: Climb 1,300+ steps to San Giovanni Fortress for panoramic views.

Sunset: Watch the sun set over Kotor Bay from the top of the fortress.

Dinner: Seafood risotto + local wine

Kotor, a fortified medieval town nestled within a dramatic bay, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally settled by the Romans, its massive walls and Venetian-style architecture tell the story of its strategic importance on the Adriatic. The town has survived earthquakes, plagues, and foreign dominations, yet remains remarkably intact.

Day 8: Blue Cave & Bay Cruise

The Bay of Kotor is often mistaken for a fjord but is actually a submerged river canyon. The Blue Cave, accessible only by boat, is a natural sea grotto where sunlight creates an otherworldly blue glow. The bay area was a key maritime hub for centuries, defended by fortified islets like Our Lady of the Rocks.

Day 9: Budva Beaches

Budva is one of the oldest cities on the Adriatic coast, dating back over 2,500 years. Its Old Town was fortified by the Venetians and has endured pirate raids, Ottoman advances, and multiple earthquakes. Layers of Roman, Byzantine, and medieval architecture are preserved within its stone walls.

Day 10: Durmitor National Park

Žabljak is the highest town in the Balkans and the gateway to Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Black Lake (Crno Jezero) is a glacial lake surrounded by pine forest and rugged peaks, formed during the Ice Age. Local legends speak of ancient deities inhabiting the surrounding caves.

Zlatibor has long been a cultural and historical center of Western Serbia. Its open-air museums and traditional villages preserve the highland customs of the region. It played a key role in Serbian resistance during WWII and is now a symbol of mountain resilience and rural heritage.

Day 12: Back to Belgrade

Return to Belgrade & Departure
